Activity Objectives:
  • Recognize that the majority of patients with depression will ultimately relapse
  • Outline patient counseling strategies for initiating long-term treatment
  • Explain treatment considerations in switching and augmenting therapy in managing treatment resistant depression
  • Illustrate the importance of addressing comorbid conditions — medical and emotional — when initiating a successful treatment plan
  • Distinguish the impact of side effects on treatment outcome in terms of quality of life and patient compliance
  • Review relevant studies discussing the rationale for therapeutic options in refractory patients
Credit Designation:
Medical Education Resources is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. Medical Education Resources designates this educational activity for a maximum of 2.0 hours of category 1 credit toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the activity. This CME activity was planned and produced in accordance with the ACCME Essentials.

Obtaining CME Credit:
This program is intended for psychiatrists and primary care physicians and will be available from May 26, 2003 until May 26, 2004. To receive your CME certificate, please fill out the activity evaluation and posttest on this website. The registration fee for this CME activity has been waived by the grantor.
